"The findings of the analysis of the first-quarter results from the Nexium (esomeprazole magnesium) clinical trial," the study, called Nexium Safety and Innovation, "were published in the journal" in April 2022.
"We believe the findings of this study are the most comprehensive scientific information on the safety and efficacy of nexium, a widely used drug for gastroesophageal reflux disease," said Steven G. Nexium is a proton pump inhibitor. It blocks the acid pumps that produce acid in the stomach, causing stomach acid to accumulate in the lining of the esophagus and stomach. Esophageal acid is produced in the mucous membrane around the valve, which leads to a narrowing of the esophagus. The drug's effect is to relax the lower esophageal sphincter, which makes the valve more open. Nexium lowers the amount of acid in the stomach by decreasing the amount of stomach acid produced by the stomach.
Nexium and Zantac are approved for GERD in 2012 and approved for H2D in 2003. It is also approved for GERD for the treatment of post-surgical proctitis in 2007.
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, in which 24,000 patients with reflux disease participated, compared the efficacy of Nexium to placebo. The results showed no significant difference in the number of patients who were treated with Nexium, but the number of patients who were not treated with Nexium was significantly lower.
Esomeprazole, which is marketed under the brand name Nexium, had the lowest adverse events.
The study has since been stopped, but the results are still preliminary. Nexium and Zantac are currently in phase 3 trials for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease.
The drug's safety and efficacy have been confirmed by a study in 2021 by the FDA. It found no increase in heart rate, dizziness, and gastrointestinal symptoms, which are common in patients with GERD.
The study was supported by the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, both of which funded the study. In a study published in the March 2018 issue of the journal, researchers evaluated the efficacy of the drug Nexium for the treatment of reflux symptoms. They found no significant difference in the number of patients who had a reflux attack versus the number of patients who had a heartburn attack with the same drug. Additionally, the study showed no statistically significant difference in the incidence of heartburn. The authors of the study, in their editorial piece, wrote, "It is unclear why patients who do not require long-term treatment with Nexium might be willing to tolerate the drug for reflux disease."
A study in December 2022, which was funded by the National Institutes of Health, examined the safety and efficacy of the drug Nexium for treating GERD. It also found no increased incidence of heartburn or other gastrointestinal side effects.
The results of the study are not yet published. However, Nexium is a once-weekly maintenance drug that has been available for many years.
"I would recommend to patients to take a single daily dose of Nexium for 14 days at least 14 days before they experience any gastrointestinal symptoms," Kocsis said. "Patients who have tried Nexium for reflux disease and have not been symptom responsive should be monitored closely."
The drug's side effect profile has been studied in more than 10,000 patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease. It is approved for the treatment of reflux disease in adults and children.
